Medical Coder – Outpatient Coding & AI Evaluation $38,400–$61,440/year estimated annualized equivalent
$20–$32/hour
Remote | Independent Contractor | United States | 50 openings
Estimated annualized equivalent is based on 40 hours/week × 48 working weeks. This is not guaranteed annual compensation; actual earnings depend on hours worked and project availability.
About the Role
We are seeking experienced Medical Coders with strong outpatient coding expertise to contribute to an AI training and evaluation project. You’ll use your knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and outpatient Evaluation & Management (E&M) coding to review real-world medical documentation and help improve how AI systems understand and interpret healthcare coding.
No prior AI experience is required. The focus is on your coding knowledge, documentation expertise, accuracy, and ability to apply established coding standards consistently.
What You’ll Do
• Annotate and review outpatient medical records from physician offices, clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, and hospital outpatient departments.
• Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes based on supporting documentation.
• Apply outpatient E&M leveling using official guidelines, including medical decision making and total time .
• Apply outpatient coding conventions covering diagnosis coding, modifier usage, medical necessity, and linking diagnoses to procedures.
• Review different types of clinical documentation, including office visit notes, procedure notes, and operative reports.
• Communicate with project stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve documentation ambiguities.
• Provide detailed feedback on coding guidelines, edge cases, and recurring challenges to improve workflows and model understanding.
Required Qualifications
• Active AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.
• Comprehensive understanding of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems .
• Strong understanding of outpatient E&M leveling guidelines.
• Hands-on outpatient coding experience.
• Experience with outpatient clinical documentation and associated coding challenges.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and consistency when applying coding standards.
• Access to current official ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding resources , as well as applicable E&M guidelines.
Relevant Outpatient Coding Experience
Experience in one or more of the following settings is relevant:
• Primary care
• Specialty clinics
• Ambulatory surgery centers
• Hospital outpatient departments
• Physician offices
• Clinic-based outpatient services
